Firstly, pick out the kind of fabric for your quilt. Usually quilts are manufactured using 100% cotton or cotton mixes. Cotton is a very stable, spacious and natural material to work with, it is also commonly not highly inflammable and is not allergic, unlike some artificial fibers such as polyolefin and viscose rayon. Synthetic fibers and cotton mixes can be oftentimes a little more baffling to use as they cockle and crease far more than 100 percent cotton does, even so they can be found in a really vast variety of bright colors and paints and can be fabulous in appearance. Artificial fibers can be tricky to quilt though because they have a "cavernous" feeling, suchwise if you're an apprentice, you should use 100% cotton or cotton mixes if it is possible.
